What does the wind mitigation inspector look for?

The seven items on Florida's Form 1802, in plain words, with what to have ready for each and where impact windows and doors are recorded. Factual; no figures, no promises.

Which of these can you document today?

Tick what you have paperwork or labels for. The list is what the inspector records; it is not a score.

How this works

The form records seven features of the house. Five are about the roof, one is about how the walls are built, and one, opening protection, is about every window, glass door, entry door and garage door. The inspector records what exists and can be documented; nothing on the form is a rating the installer gives.

For opening protection, the inspector looks for the approval label on each impact window and door, or the product approval paperwork and the permit. Whichever opening is least protected is what the house is recorded as, which is why a whole-house job and complete paperwork matter.

It runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere. It is a guide, not a quote or a professional assessment — products, openings and associations differ, so follow the maker's instructions where they disagree, and the installer confirms what the job needs when they measure it.

Questions people ask

What is a wind mitigation inspection?
A visual inspection of a Florida home's wind-resistant features, recorded on the state's Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection form (OIR-B1-1802). A licensed inspector, contractor, architect or engineer completes it; the homeowner gives it to the insurer.
Where do impact windows come into it?
Under opening protection, item 6. The inspector records whether every glazed opening and every door is impact-rated or has an approved cover, from the labels and approval paperwork. One unprotected opening is recorded as such for the whole house.
Does the inspection change my insurance?
That is the insurer's decision, based on what the form records. This checklist explains what is recorded; it does not predict a premium or a discount.
How long is the form valid?
Generally five years from the inspection date, unless the home changes. Check with your insurer.
What should I have ready?
Permits and approval documents for the roof and for every impact window and door, attic access for the roof items, and the labels on the glass or frames visible.
